:: N I C A R A G U
A ::
Nicaragua
is the largest country in Central America and is commonly known as the land
of lakes and volcanoes. Despite its colonial cities, rural mountain
villages, jungle backdrops, untouched off-shore islands and the fact that
Nicaragua’s days of armed conflicts are long over, Nicaragua remains
the least visited country in Central America. Even though travelling on the
spotty roads can be hard-hitting and time-consuming, Nicaragua remains a
beautiful and extremely friendly country with some of the true,
paradise-like unblemished gems of the Caribbean; the Corn Islands.
:: North-western Nicaragua: Léon &
Poneloya ::
The most volcanic region in Central America

Ahhhh,
Léon! This beautiful and colonial city was Nicaragua’s
capital for two centuries and, still today, has many cathedrals, cobbled
streets and tiny parks. Deeply connected to the past, there is much to
discover in this city, which many residents believe to be the
quintessential city of Nicaragua, i.e. not Granada. Nearby, Poneloya is a
quiet fishing village with good surfing possibilities and with local beach
kitchens offering magical sea cuisine.

:: Bluefields
and the Corn Islands ::
Remote
islands offering good diving and an extremely relaxed atmosphere

Bluefields
is a Caribbean port named after a Dutch pirate and it has a
fascinating mix of ethnic cultures.
Some 70 km off the cost, here, you’ll find the magical Corn
Islands, Big Corn Island and Little Corn Island, offering good diving, magical
sunsets and beautiful beaches. They are not to be missed, if you’re
in the area!!!
:: Lago de Nicaragua: Granada and Isla de
Ometepe ::
The largest lake in Central America

Lago
de Nicaragua, known locally as “The Sweet Sea”, is a must-go
destination. At its northern shores, the lovely colonial city of Granada
awaits all kinds of travels. This city is extremely charming and also the handicraft centre of the
Masaya region. Of the lakes 400 islands, Isla de Ometepe, the largest of
all islands, is the most interesting. It is an ecological jewel
formed by two large volcanoes, charming and sparsely developed for
visitors.
:: The Mosquito Coast: Pearl Lagoon and the
Pearl Keys ::
Part of
the larger Mosquito Region offering a mix of far-flung tropical keys

Blue
waters, offshore keys, coral reefs, nesting turtles, and lobster for dinner
everyday… Sounds nice? The 500-something km long Caribbean coast of
Nicaragua is part and the Miskito region, a secret region that not many
people have visited! Lagua de Perlas (Pearl
Lagoon) is a sleepy Miskito fishing community. Off the cost, here,
you’ll find the Cayos Perlas (Pearl Keys), and archipelago of 18 perfect tropical
islands. You can stay on the islands with local fishers and experience
nestling turtles during the night!
Future activities in Nicaragua could be to:

Fast facts and hints on Nicaragua
