:: P O R T U G A L ::

Even though Portugal is a small country it boasts great attractions such as superb beaches, landscapes of olive groves, folk festivals and one of Europe’s most relaxed capitals.

The population is only 10 million people, but nevertheless Portugal played an important role in discovering land outside Europe and in five different continents. Hence, more than 200 million people speak Portuguese today in Portugal, Brazil, Guinea Bissau, Cap Verde, Mozambique, East Timor, Sao Tome and Principe as well as Angola (the so-called Lusofonian countries).

Eventually, we will post more pictures and some text on our traveling in Portugal; however destinations outside Europe deserve our foremost interest.

Driving through Portugal (1997)

In 1997 we spent three weeks driving from Lisbon through the regions of Setúbal and Beja to Lagos at the Algarve Coast. We primarily stayed in the region of Faro in a little house in Luz, a small idyllic village at the beach. From Luz, we visited nearby places, e.g. Alvor and Sagres.

Madeira, Portuguese territory in the Atlantic Ocean (2002)

Jakob spent one week on Madeira in 2002, where he rented a car to drive around the entire island and visit various sites of interest. Madeira is an autonomous Portuguese archipelago that lies off the North-West African coast, 535 miles from Lisbon. It has a mountainous landscape and pleasant weather all year.

Future places to go in Portugal

We both want to revisit Portugal at some point in the future. In addition, we would both like to visit all of Portugal’s oversea territories, i.e. we lack the Azores and Macau.

Fast facts and hints

Daily budget: On the cheap: 10-20 Euro; more activities: 40-50 Euro

Pros: People, culture, scenery; Cheaper than Spain...

Cons: No cheap flights between Madeira and the Azores (you have to go back to mainland Portugal... stupid)

In a nutshell: The worlds smallest but historically greatest countries
