Pico
del Teide, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, 1990
Spain
is an incredible fantastic country that every real traveler should visit at
least once in a lifetime. Spain has a vast history, thus in Spain you will
find remnants from the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Hebrews,
Arabs, Berbers, French and Vikings. Spain had an enormous impact on the
Latin American countries and accordingly Spanish is spoken in more than 25
countries around the world by more than 500 million people. Even Anders
speaks pretty good “tourist Spanish” now.
After
France, Spain is the second most visited country in the world as well as
the second most mountainous country in Europe just behind Switzerland. In
respect to UNESCO World Heritage sites, Spain is number one in the world,
and in terms of National Parks, Spain is number one in Europe.
We
have visited Spain 2 times together in 1988 and 1990. Furthermore, Anders
spent nearly one month in Spain in 2002. In addition, Jakob spent one week
in Spain in 2004. In march 2007, Anders visited the Spanish territory,
Ceuta, in Northern Africa.
Eventually
we will post more pictures and some text on our traveling in Spain; however
destinations outside Europe deserve our foremost interest.

Car-trip to Spain (1988)
In
1988 – at the age of 6 – we drove with our parents through
Germany and France to the region of Asturias. We lived for nearly 3
weeks in a little house in the small town of El Puntal, enjoying the Costa
Verde and the surrounding townships and trekking areas. We visited Laredo,
Villaviciosa de Asturias, Oviedo, Gijou, Covadonga, Mirador del Fito,
Tazones and Cudillero. We also trekked in the Picos Del Europa (2648m)
National Park. We didn’t go home by car, but crossed The Biscay from
Bilbao in Spain to Portsmouth, West Sussex in England.

Tenerife, The Canary Islands (1990 and 2004)
In the autumn in 1990 we stayed on the exotic island of Tenerife,
more specifically in Puerto de la Cruz where we simply enjoyed life living
on a luxury hotel. During our stay we visited Parque Nacional Del Teide and
trekked the slopes of the mighty volcano Pico del Teide.
Jakob revisited Tenerife in 2004 to explore this volcanic island
even more.

Inter-railing in Spain (2002)
Anders came by train from Toulouse to Barcelona in the region of
Catalonia where he stayed in a camping site just outside town enjoying the
city and the Costa Brava. After staying in and near Barcelona for app. one
week (also doing some partying in Callela), Anders moved on to Valencia
down the coast where he stayed for 5 days. Next, Anders continued down the
coast to Málaga in the region of Andalusia doing some trekking in
the Sierra Nevada mountain range, and ended up staying at Costa del Sol for
more than 10 days, shifting between the cities of Torremolinos, Torre
Blanca, Benalmádena and Fuengirola. Then, Anders proceeded to the
British territory Gibraltar and ended his stay in Spain in Madrid for a
couple of days before he got home via Paris and Hamburg.
Ceuta, Spanish Territory in North Africa (2007)
During
a 3 week trip to Morocco in March/April, Anders bussed from Marrakesh to
Tangier via Fez and Meknes. During his stay in Northern Morocco, he visited
the Spanish Territory Ceuta. It is an autonomous city of Spain located in
the Mediterranean, on the North African side of the Strait of Gibraltar.
The tapas there were great!

Future places to go in Spain
Spain
is truly one of the most magnificent countries in Europe and it deservers a
lot of visits. Hence, we will probably go to Spain every once in a while.
E.g. we both want to visit the Balearic Islands.
In
addition, we would both like to visit Melilla (oversea territory) and some
of the other Canary Islands we haven’t visited.
Fast facts and hints
Daily budget: On the cheap: 20 Euro;
more activities: 40 Euro; flights to the Canary Islands not included
Pros: Lively cities; Relaxed people: It’s normal
to have dinner at 11 p.m.
Cons: Spanish can be
difficult to understand in Spain as compared to Latin American countries...
In a nutshell: The sun almost always
shines in the south...
