The Kingdom of Thailand is situated in the heart of South-East Asia. Attracted by an amazing combination of stunning natural beauty, ancient history, national identity, traditional culture, well-known hospitality, culinary cuisine and a pulsating party scene, Thailand is probably the most visited country in SE-Asia.

Places visited

We have visited Thailand quite a few times and each of us has spent almost three months in this country. Initially we went there as post-high school backpackers back in 2001, but later we’ve been using Thailand as a first-stop jumping-point for the exploration of other areas in SE-Asia.

Winter 2001/2002

Back in winter 2001/2002, we, our big brother Hans and two buddies from highschool did a 6-week long circuit from Bangkok to southern Thailand visiting the islands Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Krabi, Phang Nga Bay and the Phi Phi Islands.

August 2004

Then, in late August 2004 we made a stopover on Koh Tao after a longer journey from Bali to Bangkok, to visit our friends TJ and Tom which at that time were lazing at this small isle as dive instructors. We also visited Chumpon and Ranong Provinces on that trip.

July and August 2005 and 2006

In July 2005 our family made a halt in Bangkok before heading to Indonesia and, finally, Anders did some serious partying in Bangkok in early July 2006. Later that summer Jakob and Rie (re)visited Krabi and the Phi Phi Islands ending their SE-Asia trip trough Cambodia, Malaysia and Southern Thailand.

Future places to go in Thailand

There’s no shortage of interesting places that we would like to visit in Thailand. To mention a few places and what they offer:

§  The Thailand-Myanmar border; the Karen and other indigenous people

§  Surin and Similan Islands; diving

§  Tarutao Marine National Park; island-hopping and beach combing

§  Ang Thong Marine National Park; surrealistic seascape like the Rock Islands in Micronesia

§  (Re)visiting the islands Ko Tao, Ko Samui and Ko Phangang with a SLR camera

§  Trang Province with its off-shore islands

§  Ayutthaya and Lopburi; historic cities and old temples

§  Sokuthai: old city with beautiful Buddhist architecture

§  Ko Mak and Ko Kut; islands near Cambodia

§  Narathiwat & Songkhla Provinces; Muslim areas facing Malaysia

§  The Golden Triangle in Northern Thailand; opium-culture at the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong Rivers

§  Prasat Hin Phimai near Nakhon Ratchasima; outstanding Khmer temple outside Angkor Wat

Fast facts and hints

Daily budget: On the cheap: 10-15$ ; more activities: 20-50$

Pros: There are still many undiscovered and tranquil beaches and isles off the beaten track

Cons: Pattaya and Phuket are growing into tourist metropolises which devastate the culture and nature

In a nutshell: Smiling people; picture-perfect beaches; elephants in the streets; spicy food
