The Last Frontier
ALASKA

Alaska is vast and it would take several months to visit each corner of the state. We did a 2 week road trip to visit key places and get a flavor for this magnificent corner of planet Earth. Majestic... Untamed... Breathtaking... Remote... Culture-rich... That's Alaska.

If you’re looking for a vast mountain range, amazing glaciers, diverse flora and fauna, and crystal-clear lakes, look no further than Alaska. We did an amazing road trip to encounter the best of the wild state: Glaciers, towering mountains, lakes, boreal forests, tundra, grizzlies, moose, eagles, whales, rugged coastlines, far flung villages, native people, Mount Denali, boat cruises, and buttered crab legs. It’s like nowhere else on Earth. Truly majestic and wild. Alaska really is a treasure trove of natural wonders and adventure.

Alaska’s culture is as rich and diverse as its landscapes, shaped by its indigenous peoples and its unique history. The state is home to a variety of Native Alaskan groups, each with its own traditions, languages, and art forms, such as the vibrant totem poles. The spirit of community and resilience is deeply woven into Alaska’s way of life, with locals often coming together for celebrations, festivals, and cultural events. Alaska’s people are known for their independence, warmth, and connection to the land, making it a place where both tradition and modernity coexist in harmony. The strong sense of identity and pride among Alaskans fosters a welcoming atmosphere for visitors, offering a glimpse into a culture that values the beauty of the natural world and the strength of its people.

Location: 2 weeks of traveling through main parts of Alaska

We flew into Anchorage and rented a Chevy Tahoe with four-wheel drive to enable some serious off-road adventures. Our first stop was Palmer, where we visited the Alaska State Fair—a vibrant celebration of all things Alaskan! Nestled in the stunning Matanuska Valley, the fair provides breathtaking mountain views as a backdrop to its lively atmosphere. Of course, we had to sample some amazing fair foods, including crab legs, crab cakes, tiger shrimp, oysters, halibut, and we couldn’t resist visiting the wine bar.

Next, we explored Anchorage, where the Alaska Native Heritage Center stood out as a highlight, showcasing the diverse traditions of the state’s Indigenous peoples. We spotted a moose on the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, and downtown Anchorage offered vibrant markets, local breweries, and fresh seafood.

We then drove along the Turnagain Arm, one of Alaska’s most breathtaking natural wonders. This stunning stretch of coastline winds along the base of towering mountains, offering spectacular views of tidal flats and rivers flowing into the ocean.

A visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center was fun. We next took the mountain tunnel to the dramatic Prince William Sound and Whittier, a one-of-a-kind Alaskan village where everyone lives in the same building, the iconic Begich Towers. Our next stop was the Seward Highway, a breathtaking journey through some of Alaska’s most stunning landscapes, including lush forests, lakes, sparkling waters, towering mountains, and numerous glaciers. On the Kenai Peninsula, we took a cruise through Kenai Fjords to experience tidewater glaciers cracking and calving into icy waters. It was a spectacular boat trip where we saw humpback whales, sea otters, puffins, sea eagles, and stellar sea lions in a wild bay surrounded by snow-capped mountains and rugged coastlines.

After some cozy time and a few treks around the Kenai area, we visited the charming village of Kenai on Cook Inlet. We then continued north towards Fairbanks, stopping in Wasilla, Willow, and Talkeetna to experience local life.

Finally, we entered Denali National Park, home to North America’s tallest peak, Mount Denali. There, we experienced breathtaking landscapes of rugged mountains, vast tundra, and glacial rivers. Despite several days of rain, the weather cleared just in time for our arrival, and we enjoyed perfect conditions in Denali. We spotted grizzly bears, caribou, moose, and Dall sheep. Denali is truly the heart of Alaska’s wild beauty and one of the most memorable experiences we’ve ever had.
