JOURNEYS
"Travelling - it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller",
by Ibn Battuta.
Our journeys are bold and ambitious, and perhaps the flagship of this homepage.
Although we are also trekking and island nerds, our journeys are sorts of trailblazing travel expeditions which are unique, challenging and adventurous, and thus they epitomize our spirit within adventure.
Often, the regions, countries and places we visit during our journeys take on an exotic quality. What matters is to get away from the established routes and seek something that little bit more special and authentic. Often, we might have to overcome a bit of hardship and logistical challenges since our journeys most often don’t run smoothly. This is all part of the fun.
In our view, a journey is something you would recommend to others. To us, what really matters, is to get away from the established routes and seek something that little bit more special and authentic. We are not talking about the ultimate expedition, but to move away from the familiar, out of the comfort zone, where everyday situations and events take on an exotic quality.

Island hopping and trekking trip along
WEST GREENLAND
Island hopping, fjord cruising and hiking trip along Kalaallit Nunaat, the wild west coast and the western Arctic Circle region of Greenland.
Greenland is the world's largest non-continental island, of with two-thrids of the island is north of the Artic Circle. 80% of the island covered with ice sheet and there are hundreds of glaciers flowing from the ice sheet, in some places extending all the way to the sea. The coastline has the largest fjords in the world and hughe chuncks of ice break off the glaciers creating icebergs.
A journey along the western coast of Greenland is not about ticking off sights. It is about slowing down and letting the Arctic set the pace. It is about immersion rather than speed. There are no roads between settlements, so travel is by boat and plane.
Over three unforgettable weeks, we travel north through a world of deep fjords, drifting icebergs, and small coastal communities where nature is ever-present.
Along the way, we do immense island hopping, fjord cruising, hiking and whale watching.
We enjoy the silence, feel the rhythm of coastal life, and experience one of the last truly wild regions on Earth.
One village, one fjord, and one iceberg at a time.
Location: Nuuk, the Nuuk Fjords, Maniitsoq, Kangaamiut, Sisimiut, Aasiaat, Disko Island and Ilulissat, during three weeks
Our adventure begins in Nuuk, Greenland’s vibrant capital, where modern Nordic design, Inuit culture, and dramatic nature meet. Just outside the city lies the vast Nuuk fjord system, one of the largest fjord complexes in the world. Here, towering mountains, Sermitsiaq glacier, and calm, reflective waters offer a first glimpse of Greenland’s immense scale and silence. Days are spent sailing deep into the fjords, hiking along ridgelines, and experiencing how quickly urban life fades into pure wilderness.
Continuing north, we arrive in Maniitsoq, a town dramatically framed by sharp peaks and open ocean. Often called the “Venice of Greenland” due to its many small islands, Maniitsoq offers a raw and authentic Arctic atmosphere. We do several hiking tours and sail deep into the fjords of Hamborgerland as well as the Eterniry Fjord.
From Maniitsoq, we board the coastal passenger ship, operated by Arctic Umiaq Line, which also enters several fjords, sheltered waters and visits the isolated villages of Kangaamiut and Itilleq, among others.
From here, the journey follows the coastline to Sisimiut, the northernmost town in Greenland with year-round access. Sisimiut is a fascinating blend of tradition and progress, where sled dogs, fishing boats, and modern cafés coexist. The surrounding landscapes invite long hikes, kayaking, and quiet moments overlooking the Davis Strait.
Further north, we visit Aasiaat, scattered across a maze of islands, where everyday life unfolds in close connection with the sea. This is a place where sunsets stretch late into the night and icebergs drift silently past the harbor.
From here, we venture to Disko Island, a land unlike any other in Greenland. Known for its dark basalt mountains, volcanic geology, and natural hot springs, Disko Island feels both ancient and otherworldly. The contrast between black rock, white ice, and deep blue water is striking and unforgettable. We do several hikes on the island.
The journey reaches its climax in Ilulissat, home to Ilulissat Icefjord. Here, colossal icebergs are born from the Greenland Ice Sheet and make their slow, majestic journey into Disko Bay. Hiking along the Icefjord’s edge, sailing among the ice, or simply watching the ever-changing sculptures from shore is a powerful reminder of nature’s scale and fragility.

An island of snow and ice where peole have lived for thousands of years, Greenland is unlike anywhere else in the world. A vast island of ice, unexplored fjords and sheer, uinclimbed mountains. With an inquisitive mind, the opportunities for exploration are endless.

Part of the oldest part of Nuuk, near the colonial harbour which looks over the mouth of Nuuk Fjord. In the backdrop is Mount Sermitsiaq (1179m), a beautiful saddle seen from many places in Nuuk.

Not only freshly fish but all kinds of sea mammals are sold here, including seal, walrus, minke whale and narwhal. All fresh but not everyone's taste.

Nuuk may be the largest city in Greenland but the backcountry is always close. Along Siaqqinneq road, the gravel road turns in backcountry hiking trails.

Some of the best hiking trips are the closets two mountains, Quassussuaq (433m) and Ukkusissaq (772m). Other options are Kuanninnguit (779m), Aqqitsoq (800m) and Oriartorfik (960m).

We sailed from Nuuk into Nuup Kanmgerlua and Kangerlusarsunnguaq, where thre are many hiking possiblities.

In the Thule culture, the dolls were used as toys and amulets. As influence from the outside grew, they became more colorful. Many where given traditional clothing.

Focus on local art and local crafts. Many local artist focus on angakkuq (shaman) pratices.

Preserved for more than 500 years, they were found walled up in a dry cave. The now lie on neindeer skin, dressed in their furs. We could still see the tattoos on once of their faces.

The Nuuk Fjord System (Kangerlua) is a network of deep fjords running between the near vertical walls of snow-capped mountains. It is the second largest fjord system in the world, the largest being Scoresby Sound in east Greenland.

The fjord of Godthåb. Nuup Kangerlua in local tongue - West Greenland's largest fjord system. Its greatest width is approximately 30 km and the length of the longest fjord arm is 160 km from the ice sheet to the mouth in the Labrador Sea.

While in Nuuk, we did several tours into Kangerlua. There are severeal tour operators in Nuuk doing shorter and longer tours. Prices are steep, but the scenery is unparalleled.

As our small boat moves up the fjord, the scale of the soaring rock cliffs that sweep down to the water is impressive.

Most of Nuuk Fjord is ice free all year.

The water temeprature is only a few degrees, so ropes are used to be able to drag the swimmer back into the boat if the person is beeing stuck by hypothermia and sudden cramps. Qooqqut is an hour's boat ride from Nuuk up the fjord.

A traditional hunting and fishing village 75 km northeast of Nuuk, Kapisillit is the only settlement in the Nuuk Fjord with a permanent population of just 40. The government provides power, fuel, health care, education and a shop. The village tumbles down the hillside to the fjord's edge with 470m Pingu Mountains towering over it.

View of remote summer cabins in the bottom of the fjord around Akulikitsuaqqat Ikkarluat. There are several hiking trains around Kapisillit village.

More than 80% of the 20.000 population of Nuuk are of Inuit lineage. Even though it is now a "big city", it is still a very Greenlandic place.

Probably the best restaurant in all of Nuuk oin the roof floor of Hotel Hans Egede, the best and only 4-start hotel in Nuuk. We also had the Greenlandic plate with reindeer and musk ox.

We anchored in the bottom of the fjord and did some scrambling until we hit the plateau.

Anders crossing the Innannguup Sava moorlands with a view towards the fjord. There are many mnosquitoes in the area during the summer months.

The area is wild a beautiful

The kids a realxing after the 3 hours hike to the Nikku ice sheet.

From the Saattut plateau we have tremendous view over the icefjord. We spend several hours here to watch and listen to the ice cracking. The solitude and peacefulness we encounter is amazing.
